Short Description:
From 1970-1992, average production of milk per cow in the United States has increased, while the number of cows and the number of farms with milk cows have decreased. In this article (written in 1992), the author predicted that these trends would likely to continue, with additional challenges for the U.S. dairy industry emerging in the future.
Abstract:
Challenges facing the U.S. dairy industry include reduced government involvement due to budgetary constraints, international trade leading to new opportunities, environmental and animal welfare concerns, and consumer preferences. Because of these issues, basic and applied research, technology transfer, and legislation will be necessary for the dairy industry to meet upcoming challenges.
