More Information...

Short Description:
Estimates by the Giving USA Foundation and the Center on Philanthropy say that total charitable contributions from U.S. individuals, corporations, and foundations declined by 3.2% to $303.8 billion in inflation-adjusted dollars in 2009 from $315.1 billion in 2008. Charitable contributions to environmental and animal-related organizations, however, increased during this time period by 2.7%, also in inflation-adjusted dollars.

Abstract:
Total charitable giving was calculated from over 75 million U.S. households, one million companies, 120,000 estates, and 77,000 foundations. These gifts go to more than 1.2 million IRS-registered charities and 350,000 religious congregations.

By type of donor:

  • Individual giving declined by 0.4% (0% in inflation-adjusted dollars) in 2009, to $227.4 billion, although media reports suggest that individual contributions may have increased toward the end of the year as the economy improved.
  • Charitable bequests declined by 23.9% (-23.6% in adjusted dollars) to $23.8 billion in 2009.
  • Foundation grantmaking totaled $38.4 billion, representing a decline by 8.9% (-8.6% in adjusted dollars) during the year.
  • Total individual giving averaged $1,940 per household.
By recipient, giving to environmental and animal-related organizations rose 2.3% (2.7% in adjusted dollars) to an estimated $6.15 billion, or 2% of total giving.
