Short Description:
A preview of the study "Health & Wellness 2008: The Purpose-Driven Consumer" showed that healthy convenience items are a high-growth food category. Additionally, consumer ideas of "freshness" are changing, and more people relate "local," "farm raised," and other "humane" terms to the concept.
Abstract:
Areas of significant growth in the food industry may include healthy take-out meals from the deli (compared with restaurants), as well as grab-and-go snacks and healthy items for children.
Locally raised animals and locally grown foods are increasingly important to many shoppers, with 57% saying they look for such products. More than one-third of consumers say "farm-raised" is an important product claim, followed by "humane-treatment certified," free range and cage-free.
