More Information...

Short Description:
A study funded by food safety law firm Marler Clark finds contamination with potentially harmful strains of bacteria in over 80% of the Seattle area raw chicken samples tested.

Abstract:
Tests were conducted among 18 brands of chicken from 18 Seattle area stores. The results found no differences in safety between local and organic chickens than others. By origin, 59 samples came from Washington, while 13 came from other states, and 28 were from unknown origins. However, origin had no bearing on the safety of the chicken as potentially harmful bacteria were found in samples from every state tested.

On average, other studies identified the presence of Campylobacter in 33-53% of chicken, compared to 65% found in Seattle area chicken. The presence of Salmonella in Seattle chicken (19%) was also slightly higher than average (16%). Moreover, 42% of Seattle chicken samples were found to have Staphylococus aureus, with 10 of these samples being Methicillan-rsistant (MRSA).
