Sales of RSPCA Chicken up £55 Million in a Year

Short Description:
From March 2009 to March 2010, sales of the Freedom Food brand of "higher welfare" chicken increased by £55 million, while sales of standard chicken declined during the same time period. The Freedom Food labeling program is operated by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Abstract:
Consumer spending on Freedom Foods labeled products rose from £16.4 million to £71 million from March of 2009 to March of 2010, compared with a drop of £26 million for standard chicken. In volume, the amount of Freedom Food chicken sold in supermarkets increased from 5.6 million kilograms (kg) to 20.7 million kg over this same time period. The volume of standard chicken sold declined by 11 million kg.
