This overview of the Asian egg industry shows that the majority of egg consumption in Asia takes place in the most intensely populated areas, where eggs are a major source of protein. There is significant diversity in egg pricing, production, and processing methods within Asia.
Abstract:
Asia is responsible for over 65% of global egg production, although the production, processing, and pricing infrastructure can vary dramatically by region. Singapore has the highest cost due to dependence on imported eggs, with the majority originating from Malaysia. Egg products are also imported from Europe, India, and the United States. Another region of high cost, Japan, relies to a large extent on the importation of eggs due to high domestic demand.
On the other hand, egg pricing in Vietnam is in the middle range due to consumption and basic egg production systems, while pricing in China is low despite high consumption. In China, 90% of eggs are consumed within the country itself; per capita consumption is over 300 eggs per year. However, there is overcapacity in this market, with 80% of Chinese production occurring in small, backyard operations. Egg prices are the lowest in India due to low feed costs.
