Short Description:
Based on a national survey of over 47,000 households, this report collects information on the pet population and their owners within the United States.
Abstract:
According to these survey results, the pet dog population is estimated at 72 million, while the pet cat population is estimated at 82 million. In 2006 49.7% of pet owners considered their pets to be family members. Average veterinary expenses per household for all pets in 2006 was $366. In horse-owning households, 61.1% had at least one veterinary visit during the year, an increase of 11.9% from 2001.
