Asks respondents about the acceptability of using and killing animals for a variety of purposes, including fur, leather, hunting, research, etc.
Abstract:
According to this national opinion poll, 80% feel that animal have rights that should limit how humans use them, 13% feel that it's acceptable for humans to use animals as we see fit and 7% were unsure.
68% said that killing animals to make fur coats should be prohibited by law; 22% disapprove, but don't think that it should be illegal.
58% feel that animal use in cosmetic studies should be illegal, 23% disapproved, but didn't think it should be outlawed.
69% were against killing animals for leather, with 23% disapproving, but feeling that it should be legal.
60% disapproved of hunting for sport, with 27% disapproving but allowing legal.
85% feel that it's ok to kill animals for food.
66% feel that it is acceptable to capture and exhibit animals in zoos.
63% feel that it is ok to train animals to perform for humans.
58% feel that it acceptable to use them in for medical research, and the percentage (78%) was higher when asked specifically about AIDS research.
When asked if people should avoid actions that would extinguish and entire species, not matter how insignificant they might be, 60% felt that such actions should be avoided while 30% felt that the actions might be justified under certain circumstances.
