Short Description:
The results of the 2009 Gallup "moral acceptability" survey shows that U.S. public acceptance of buying and wearing animal fur as clothing has risen slightly, while acceptance of medical testing on animals and cloning animals has remained essentially constant from 2008.

Abstract:

With respect to buying and wearing fur, animal testing, and cloning animals, the U.S. adult population opinion is shown below. The only substantive change is that the perceive acceptability of buying and wearing fur increased by 7%

% Considered Morally Acceptable (2008 / 2009)

  • Buying and wearing clothing made of fur (54% / 61%)
  • Medical testing on animals (56% / 57%)
  • Cloning animals (33% / 34%)

% Morally Acceptable / % Morally Wrong (2009 only)

  • Buying and wearing clothing made of fur (61% / 35%)
  • Medical testing on animals (57% / 36%)
  • Cloning animals (34% / 63%)
There is a significant difference between Republicans and Democrats when it comes to the animal issues covered by the Gallup survey. Of particular note, 73% of Republicans approve of buying and wearing fur, compared with 53% of Democrats. Additionally, Republicans are responsible for most of the increase in perceived acceptance from 2008 to 2009 of buying and wearing animal fur.
