Short Description:
This study of the impact of reducing consumption of animal products found that to reduce carbon emissions and improve public health, farmed animal production should be reduced by at least 30%.
Abstract:
Approximately four-fifths of agricultural greenhouse gas emissions originate from the farmed animal sector. This research investigates strategies to reduce the United Kingdom's (UK) greenhouse gas emissions by 80% from 1990 levels before the year 2050, which would require a 50% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.
Using the UK and Brazil as case studies, researchers determined that a combination of agricultural technology improvements and at least a 30% reduction in farmed animal production would meet this target. Additionally, the burden of ischaemic heart disease would decrease by about 15% in the UK and 16% in São Paulo city.
