Short Description:
A 2009 survey by the Vegetarian Resource Group (VRG) found that 3% of U.S. adults say the never eat meat, poultry, and fish/seafood (classified as vegetarian). Approximately one-third to one-quarter of this group (1% of all U.S. adults) also say they never eat dairy, eggs, and honey (classified as vegan).
Abstract:
According to 2008 survey results, 50% of U.S. adults said they ordered a meat-, poultry-, and seafood-free dish sometimes, often, or always. However, for the 2009 survey, VRG asked respondents what foods they "never" eat from a list including meat, poultry, fish/seafood, dairy products, eggs, honey, or if they "sometimes eat all these foods," or "don't know."
Major Findings:
- 3% or 6-8 million U.S. adults never eat meat, poultry, or fish/seafood (vegetarian).
- 0.8% also never eat dairy, eggs, or honey (vegan).
- 1.3% would be vegan except for honey.
- 8% of total U.S. adults never eat meat.
- 5% of females (18-34) are vegetarian, while 12% of this group does not eat meat.
- 9% of males (18-34) never eat meat.
- 15% of students never eat meat.
- 11% of those residing in the west never eat meat.
