Short Description:
"The Cove," a documentary about dolphin hunting in Japan, emphasizes the health risks of consuming dolphin meat, which has been found to contain high levels of mercury. Japanese authorities, however, say they remain unconvinced of the potential danger.
Abstract:
Filmakers found dolphin meat with higher levels of mercury than allowed by Japanese standards in Taiji and other parts of Japan. Occasionally this meat is labeled as whale meat, which is supposedly more safe and of higher quality. Dolphin hunting in the Taiji area comprises about 10% (or 20,000 individual animals) of the total number of dolphins the Japanese government allows fisherman to capture and kill each year.
