According to results from the School Nutrition Association’s comprehensive "School Nutrition Operations Report: The State of School Nutrition 2009," healthy options are becoming increasingly common in lunch programs around the country. Specifically, availability of vegetarian menu items increased by 12.4% since 2007.

Foodservice consultancy Technomic has found that children ages 6-12 are "health savvy" when it comes to diet. Nearly nine out of ten children consider fresh vegetables and fresh whole fruits to be healthy.

The Humane Food Survey, a study by the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) ranks the top 25 U.S. supermarket chains (by annual sales) according to their humanely-labeled food offerings, named Whole Foods as the top ranking grocery chain. Results show a 23% overall increase in humane food offerings in stores from 2008 to 2009.

A survey of young adults in Minnesota found that current vegetarians may be more likely to "binge eat," and former vegetarians may engage in "extreme unhealthful weight control behaviors." Although a vegetarian diet is perceived by many to be healthy, it is also likely that weight loss is a significant motivation for this age group.
