Coming Soon: Year Five of HRC's Animal Tracker

We’re getting ready to launch year five of HRC’s Animal Tracker annual survey of the public opinions and behavior of adults in the U.S. This year’s survey, which will field in March, addresses opinions toward various social movements, who people trust to provide information about animal welfare, opinions about the adequacy of animal protection laws, attitudes toward the importance of animal welfare in various situations, and the frequency with which people discuss animal protection issues. We asked the exact same questions in 2008 and 2009 and will be able to analyze changes over time. When the results are available in April, we’ll also refresh the Animal Tracker graphing tool so that the results will be easy to access and interpret.

Feline Conservation Federation Census Documents Less than 3,000 Tigers in America

The Feline Conservancy Federation conducted a census of all tigers in the U.S. They used the Freedom of Information Act to obtain all USDA and state wildlife organizations' records on the matter and sought out information from private "owners" and sanctuaries as well. They found a total of 2,884 tigers in the U.S. in captivity.

Elephants in Circuses: Analysis of Practice, Policy, and Future

This policy paper reviews literature addressing the well-being of elephants in captivity and makes recommendations for changes. The paper provides a list of current laws regulating elephants in captivity, by state, as well as an extensive list of studies addressing the issue. Overall, the paper reports that current laws are inadequate for protecting elephants in captivity.

Campaign to Ban Wild Circus Animals Wins Huge Public Support

The results of a poll conducted by The Independent finds that 71% of British citizens are in support of a ban on wild animals performing in circuses, while 21% are opposed and 7% don't know.

Every year, the Humane Research Council conducts an annual survey of U.S. adults that we call the "Animal Tracker." The survey enables advocates to track and understand how public opinion and behavior is changing over time, with respect to a wide variety of critically important animal protection issues. HRC has just completed year four of the Animal Tracker and the report is now available (for free) on HumaneSpot.org.

The Animal Tracker (Wave 4 - March 2011)

This report summarizes results from Wave 4 of the Animal Tracker annual survey of U.S. adults regarding their attitudes and behavior toward animals. In summary, the results continue to show strong support for humane education and many other advocacy tactics. However, support for all tactics is lower than it was in 2008 and there appear to be fewer people engaging in animal-friendly behaviors, perhaps in part due to the economic downturn.

We're getting ready to launch year four of HRC's Animal Tracker annual survey of the public opinion and behavior of adults in the U.S. This year's survey, which will field in March, addresses specific behaviors that people change (or not) due to their concern for animals, perceived importance of humane education, and support for various advocacy tactics. We asked the exact same questions in 2008 and will be able to analyze changes over time. When the results are available in April, we’ll also refresh the Animal Tracker graphing tool that we launched in 2010.

Big Cat Rescue Online Poll Results 2010

The results of an online poll as of December 2010 hosted by Big Cats Rescue are provided in this summary. Sample sizes vary by question due to length of time individual questions have been available. Polls are open to general site traffic and the question language is geared toward these visitors; therefore results are representative only of the attitudes of Big Cat Rescue website visitors. Compared to the same survey questions results posted in July of 2009 the overall results reflect a 1% move across the board in favor of better attitudes toward protecting exotic cats from abuse through captive breeding and displaying.
